The Keystone Pipeline already exists and carries oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast of the United States. The debate here is whether phase IV of the pipeline, a new segment of the line to be built with a shortcut through Montana and Nebraska, should take place. The new segment is larger in diameter than the rest of the line, hence the name Keystone XL Pipeline. Environmentalists do not want the pipeline to adversely affect the sensitive Sand Hills region of Nebraska and they are opposed to the release of greenhouse gases that would occur with construction. Proponents argue that it would add jobs during construction and the environmental impact would be minimal. The new route has been approved by Nebraska Governor, Dave Heineman, and cleared by the Nebraska Supreme Court. In early 2015 it easily passed the U.S. House and Senate, but President Obama vetoed the bill on February 24, 2015.
