The FCC voted on February 26, 2015 to apply Title II of the Communications Act of 1934 to the internet. Adoption of this notion reclassifies internet service from one of information to one of telecommunications and ensures net neutrality or an open internet. Proponents of this issue claim that telecom companies want to continue a tiered service model in order to control the internet pipeline (the more you pay the faster internet speed you get) which boosts their profits. Conservative opponents say this is a false paradigm. They argue that the system is not broken and that the government wants to control the internet for their own purposes which would stifle innovation.
